OUT TEAM HAS collected the best resources we have found to help awaken and bring awareness to, specifically, the Church regarding the complex of REALITY OF racism.
These resources are perfect for your Prayer Circles, Small Groups, House Churches, and Church Staff to begin the long journey of awareness.
Here are two resources we would highly suggest Churches use to raise awareness.
These two books are the best we’ve found on the intersection of racism and american Christianity. Read these with friends and discuss.
Through a nationwide telephone survey of 2,000 people and an additional 200 face-to-face interviews, Michael O. Emerson and Christian Smith probed white evangelical America. They found that despite recent efforts by the movement's leaders to address the problem of racial discrimination, most white evangelicals see no systematic discrimination against blacks. The startling discovery here is how white evangelicalism’s interpretation of the Gospel has helped preserve racism in America, and is indeed, a shocking discovery. This is a must read.
The Color of Compromise takes readers on a historical journey: from America’s early colonial days through slavery and the Civil War, covering the tragedy of Jim Crow laws and the victories of the Civil Rights era, to today’s Black Lives Matter movement. Author Jemar Tisby reveals the obvious—and the far more subtle—ways the American church has compromised what the Bible teaches about human dignity and equality. Again, this is a must read for any follower of Jesus wanting to truly understand the problem of racism in the American church.
Movies About the History of Racism and CIvil Rights:
Disclaimer: We are aware of the disturbing imagery and language in many of these films. Viewer discretion is advised. These are painful and real stories that depict the reality of our nation’s history, and the current challenges of racism. It is our view that it is time to see these stories for what they are - to enter the uncensored reality we find ourselves in. It is from an altar of pain that we pray and intercede for healing and change.
